The working principle of different types of engines is different

The movement of the piston compresses the gas in the cylinder to increase its temperature and pressure.

Intake: Air (or a mixture of air and fuel) is drawn into the cylinder.
Compression: The movement of the piston compresses the gas in the cylinder to increase its temperature and pressure.
Combustion (or work): In an internal combustion engine, fuel is burned in the cylinder to produce high-temperature and high-pressure gas to push the piston to move; in an external combustion engine, the working medium expands under the action of an external heat source to push the piston to move.
Exhaust: Exhaust the exhaust gas in the cylinder.
